As an avid DIYer, I like to try my hand at all sorts of things that I come across either in the Blogosphere or through Pinterest. I’ve wanted to try my hand at some built-in Billy Bookcases for quite a while.
My main inspiration being these beautiful Billys from Just a Girl:
Amazing right? I wanted to attempt this on a small scale before committing to such a big project, so I headed to Ikea and picked up 2 small Billys to fit against one of the walls in the spare room upstairs.
I also really liked the look of the stenciling in this bookcase by Sarah Gunn:
So I picked up some stencils and paint from the Martha Stewart line and decided to get to work on making my vision a reality.
The paint I chose was a light blue with a pearlescent finish:
Now, here’s where it all started to go wrong. I probably should have read some tutorials on how to go about stenciling. But, it seemed like a straight-forward process so I just went ahead and started stippling the paint on the bookcase backing:
I wasn’t crazy about the stippled effect, but I kept going.
Now you can really start to see it going wrong. Trying to let parts of the paint dry (because the stencil was smudging it), I somehow managed to mess up on the spacing of the pattern.
To avoid any more smudging, I decided to start stenciling the bottom of the backing. Apparently my brain was not working well because clearly the pattern would never join correctly using this method. *Sigh.* Hindsight sure if a great thing.
On another note. Even stenciling badly takes FOREVER! I can’t imagine how long it would have taken if I had actually thought it through and done it correctly.
I think I would have let each part of the pattern dry before moving on the the next. Otherwise, the stencil itself just smudges the paint as you go. Also, I still don’t like the stippled effect the stencil brush gives. If I am ever to do this project again, I’ll have to research another way of doing this!
I’m still wondering whether or not to bring this built in Billy project to a completion. I did put the bookcases together and style them….I’m just deciding whether or not to give them the “built-in” treatment or leave them the way they are.
You’ll also notice that I haven’t stenciled the bookcase on the right. I’m not sure whether I can handle more of my awful stenciling capabilities!
What do you guys think? Should I scrap the project completely or just make the best of what I’ve got?
