Our living room is officially done being painted! It looks like a completely different room now. Gone is the white on white - that turned out to be cream on cream. Now we are left with crisp white trim, beautiful gray walls and stunning accented built ins. Painting the inside of our bookcases has been on my list since day one. I'm so glad that they are now painted and I love how they turned out!
There's not a whole lot to show you yet. The built ins are still empty, the walls are bare and our new custom-made couch will not arrive for another few weeks. Nonetheless, I do have some pictures of the freshly painted (empty) built-ins to share with you.
Instead of keeping them all white, I decided to accent to bookcases with a different paint color - Sherwin Williams Serious Gray - a beautiful dark gray that has a hint of navy blue in certain light.
I wasn't sure whether to paint the entire inside of each "box" so to speak, or to leave the sides white and just paint the back. I'm glad I went with the back and sides in the end, it adds some drama and depth to the piece and really sets the bookcases apart from all the white woodwork.
By the way, our entire house trim is being painted with Decorator's White by Benjamin Moore in a satin finish. I've never previously painted trim with satin, always semi-gloss, but I LOVE the satin (also known as pearl) so much more. It just feels cleaner and more contemporary. Plus, the satin finish hides imperfections in the wood way better than semi-gloss.
Decorator's White has almost no undertone so it's a perfect white for anywhere in your home.
Finally, a quick before and after:
I'm really loving how this room is coming together so far. I'm hoping to start work on styling those bookcases this week so stay tuned for some progress shots on Instagram!
