I was so excited to move in to our new house because of all the projects and work that needs to be done. The fact that we need to update every single space in this home is good because it means we can put our own touch on everything. I certainly never intended to buy a house that had previously been renovated, only to want to redo everything that we’d just paid for. No thank you!
Now that I’ve been back from vacation for almost a couple of weeks and had time to settle back in, the task ahead actually seems quite daunting. Exciting, but daunting nonetheless.
We’ve already accomplished a few small tasks, such as replacing the hardware in the kitchen and refinishing the floors (I guess this is a big task, technically!), but now we face the epic task of needing to paint every square inch of the interior.
I don’t mind painting walls. Grab a roller and it’s done in a few hours. No biggie. But when more than half of your house has cream colored wainscoting that is begging for some crisp white paint, that’s going to take a LONG time to paint. Not to mention I generally only have an hour, at best, during the day to do projects since I now have toddler running around. Life isn’t the same as it was pre-baby, that’s for sure!
SO, long story short, we’ve decided to hire out the painting. I hate spending mega bucks on something that I know I can do myself, but in the long run it means it will be done in a timely manner instead of it taking me the next three years :-)
On another note, trying to get a painter/contractor to return my calls. UGH. These guys must be really busy to be able to turn down business so easily. That’s a complaint for another day, though.
Apart from getting everything painted, we have a few other projects on tap for 2016. We will call most of these Stage 1 projects, meaning the rooms are getting a quick update but may have a proper remodel done down the road. Stage 2 will be a full remodel.
In no particular order:
Refinish all hardwood floors
- Paint trim & wainscoting white
- Paint all walls
Replace kitchen cabinet hardware Replace all fans with standard light fixtures
- Dining room (paint, add rug, decorate)
- Install closet organizers in master bedroom closet and
- Paint walls/refresh grout in master bathroom. Replace vanity, toilet. Hang new mirror. (Stage 1)
- Living room (paint, add rug, new couch, add recessed lighting)
- Add plank wall above fireplace in living room
- Gut & remodel main bathroom
- Gut & remodel first floor powder room
- Add counters and tile to laundry room
- Remove wood paneling from basement, add drywall, paint and carpet.
- Nursery (paint, decorate)
If we accomplish all of those things over the next year I will be one happy lady! It’s nice to have a defined set of goals to help keep us on track, too!
