One of the very few things that was flagged during our home inspection was that we would need to replace the masonry at the front of the house. In particular, the steps leading up the side of the garage to the kitchen. Already at that point, bricks were loose/missing and large cracks were visible.
As summer starts to draw to an end, Brian and I are worried whether the brickwork will even survive another harsh winter. I would hate for someone to fall or trip – and god forbid, we would be liable.
On top of that, Halloween will be here before we know it. I would like for trick or treaters to come to our front door, not our kitchen door. Right now there’s steps leading to the front door but no walkway! Isn’t that so strange? It’s not too bad when it’s dry out but who’s going to walk to our front door when they have to walk through muddy or snowy grass?
The mulch bed creeps half way into the steps for crying out loud!!! Also, I thought these bricks were just a cheap redbrick. Apparently, they are actually called “flamingo brick” and are in fact cheap concrete bricks dyed pink. Who knew!?
Anywaaaaay. We’ve decided to that it’s finally time to upgrade all the masonry and make the outside of our home somewhat match the beautiful interior.
Our mason starts work on Wednesday and I’m so excited to see how our exterior will be transformed.
Want to see a sneak peak of the materials I chose?
For the stair treads, we chose a gray granite. It’s amazingly beautiful in person and sparkles in the sun. It will look like these treads when done:
For the risers and sides we chose the Boston Blend Natural Stone Veneer in round. This is the stone veneer used on a fireplace (also with granite). Isn’t this spectacular? I might be adding some stone veneer to my fireplace in the future. I’m totally obsessed with this.
Finally, the walkway will be a granite blend paver laid in an H pattern, just like this one (this photo is from our mason’s website!)
EEK! Just seeing those pictures makes me excited for our mason to get to work this week! I know when this project is completed that it will completely transform the front of our house and bring it into this decade!
Hopefully by next week I’ll have some worthwhile photos to share with you!
