Quick and Easy Tea Cake Recipe

This easy to make tea cake can be whipped up in only 5 minutes using staple pantry ingredients. It is perfectly moist and not overly sweet quick bread that makes for a great hostess gift, holiday breakfast or afternoon snack. Use this basic recipe as the starting point for many others, adding in whatever flavors or glazes that you may like!

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 1 cup milk
  • cup vegetable oil
  • cup apple sauce (or increase oil to 2/3 cup)
  • 2 tbsp sugar for sprinkling on top


  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • Grease and flour a 1-lb loaf pan
  • Combine sugar, flour, baking powder and salt
  • Mix together the egg, milk, applesauce and oil
  • Gradually add dry mixture to wet until just moist
  • Pour the batter into the loaf pan, about 3/4 of the way up. Sprinkle with the remaining sugar
  • Bake for 50 - 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean
  • Allow to cool in the loaf tin for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely
