Sometimes a room doesn’t need a full makeover to feel fresh again. In my case, our living room had started to feel dark and heavy after we removed a large west-facing window during our home addition. Instead of starting over, I made a few intentional swaps, and the difference was huge. Here’s how I brightened up the space, step by step, starting with just one inspiration piece.

Quick Guide: How to Refresh a Dark Living Room
- Start with an inspiration piece you love.
- Swap dark, heavy furniture for lighter tones.
- Repeat finishes (like brass or wood) for a cohesive look.
- Use wall art to fill empty spaces with personality.
- Shop your home before buying anything new.

Step 1: Start With an Inspiration Piece
Every refresh needs a jumping-off point, and for me, it was a blue swivel chair. I found a Serena & Lily–inspired version on Amazon, and while it originally lived upstairs in our loft, I quickly realized it was perfect in the living room. The fabric pulled out the blues in my rug, set the palette for the entire space, and gave me direction for everything that followed.

Tip: In your own home, choose one piece you love – whether it’s a chair, rug, or piece of art – and let it guide the color and style decisions for the rest of the room.
Step 2: Lighten the Big Anchors
With the chair as my starting point, the old coffee table suddenly felt too dark. Since the room had already lost light from the missing window, it was only adding to the heavy feeling. I swapped it for a lighter, (budget friendly!) coastal-inspired table that instantly brightened the space and kept things airy.

Takeaway: If your room feels weighed down, look at the biggest pieces (like a coffee table or sofa) and see if a lighter alternative would help.
Step 3: Balance Finishes for a Cohesive Look
Next up was the end table. Its wood tone clashed with the new coffee table, and I didn’t want to introduce another type of wood.

Instead, I leaned into brass.

It tied beautifully into the brass sconces over the fireplace, added warmth, and created a more intentional, layered look.

Tip: When mixing finishes, repeat them in multiple spots so they feel cohesive instead of random.
Step 4: Make a Statement With Wall Art
Since the curtains came down from the east-facing window, I was left with a large blank wall. To bring it back to life, I added stacked frames on either side filled with coastal blue prints from Etsy. I used my favorite Pottery Barn look-for-less frames from Target to get the high-end look without the price tag.

Takeaway: If a wall feels bare, add art in pairs or groups to create symmetry and impact.
Step 5: Shop Your Home for the Finishing Touches
To finish off the new chair’s corner, I didn’t buy something new – I shopped my own house. A side table I already owned worked perfectly, saving money while still making the space feel complete.

Tip: Before buying new accessories, move things around from other rooms. Sometimes the perfect piece is already in your home.
What started with one chair turned into a full refresh. By choosing an inspiration piece, lightening the anchors, balancing finishes, and layering in art, the room now feels brighter, fresher, and more inviting.

The best part? None of it required a full renovation — just thoughtful swaps and styling choices.

If your living room feels dark or heavy, start with one piece you love and build from there. Small changes can truly create a whole new vibe.

Want to recreate this look in your own home? Here are the exact (or similar) pieces I used to refresh our living room:
- Blue Swivel Chair – My Serena & Lily–inspired swivel chair is from Amazon. It’s the piece that set the entire color palette for the room. It sells out frequently but always comes back in stock.
- Light Coastal Coffee Table – A lighter-toned coffee table instantly brightens up the space and feels fresh and coastal.
- Brass End Table – Instead of adding more wood tones, I chose a brass end table that ties in perfectly with our brass sconces.
- Target Gallery Wall Frames – These Pottery Barn lookalike frames are more affordable but high-quality. I use them all over my home.
- Coastal Blue Prints (Etsy) – Soft blue prints that bring color and personality to the walls without overwhelming the space.
- Side Table (Shopped From My Home) – Proof that sometimes the perfect finishing touch is already in your house.
