I’ve heard so many times over the years that a well-designed and stylish home doesn’t have family photos on display. Even more often, I’ve been told that family photos should be reserved for the “private” parts of your home – which I think means the bedroom. I find this so bizarre, as my entire home is my private space, so I’ll do with it as I please!

I LOVE displaying family photos throughout my home. If I’m going to shell out on professional photos, you can bet your bottom dollar that they’re going to have pride of place smack bag in the middle of my living room or hallway. And by the way, the bigger the better. Sure, pretty photo frames on a console table or shelf have their place – but I love the look of LARGE framed photos on my walls.

Since you’re reading this post, I’m assuming you believe the same and want to display your beautiful family photos on a wall somewhere in your home. So, here are 10 stylish approaches to a family photo wall (and some that don’t require a wall, too!)

1. Large Grid Over the Couch

A large grid of framed photos creates a clean, polished look, perfect for filling the space over a couch. The uniformity of the grid layout makes it an eye-catching focal point, while keeping the overall design balanced and cohesive.

Choose matching frames for a streamlined aesthetic or mix finishes for a more personalized feel. I personally love to either brass or wood tones in my home for a gallery wall like this, as it adds warmth to my rooms that tend to have a lot of cool tones.

2. Vertical Family Photo Wall on a Narrow Space

This is such a great way to fill a blank narrow wall! You can go small or large, have a bench or dresser underneath, or have the artwork almost go to the floor.

This method works well in tight areas, like in between windows or doors, or even on the side of a hallway. Bonus – vertical arrangements draw the eye upward, making the space feel taller and more open!

3. Extra Large Frames On a Large Blank Wall

Take advantage of a blank wall by using oversized frames for a dramatic effect. This approach lets each photo make a statement, especially when paired with professional photography or artistic shots.

4. Framed on a Console Table

Instead of hanging photos, use a console table or sideboard to display framed family pictures. Arrange a mix of small and medium-sized frames alongside decorative items like vases, books, or candles for a layered, lived-in look.

This works well in entryways, living rooms (think behind a couch), or dining rooms, offering a stylish and functional way to display memories without committing to wall space.

This option brings a more grounded, flexible approach to displaying photos while still being visually appealing!

6. Mix Photos with Wall Art

Blend family photos with other forms of wall art, such as paintings, illustrations, or typography prints, to create an art-gallery-inspired display. This adds variety and depth to your wall, turning it into an eclectic yet cohesive visual experience.

Arrange the pieces in an organic pattern, mixing different frame sizes and styles, and use a variety of mediums to keep the display dynamic and interesting.

This approach can help break up the monotony of just photos and bring a more curated, artistic vibe to your wall display!

7. Photo Ledge Display

Similar to floating shelves, a photo ledge allows for easily interchangeable photo displays. Stack frames leaning against the wall and vary the heights for an artistic arrangement.
