Tween Boy Bedroom Design

As we get deeper into building the addition on to the back of our house, and all those designs are finalized, my attention is shifting to our current master bedroom that will soon become our oldest son’s bedroom.

He’s so excited to get a “big bed” to himself, not to mention his own bathroom! However, he’s not so excited about the current decor, which doesn’t exactly scream tween boy. Since I always love the opportunity to redecorate a room, I’ve pulled together several options using affordable furniture and decor from Wayfair.

I like creating these design boards because it gives me the ability to design the spaces appropriately (so that they’re pretty and functional) but also this gives him a sense of independence in being able to choose the parts of the designs he likes and doesn’t like. My guess is in the end we will settle on a mix of different elements from each design.

Design 1

For this design, I went with a queen sized bed in a neutral off-white color. This bedroom will only have north-facing windows once the addition is done (we have the remove the current west-facing window since the addition goes on that side of the house), so I have to be very aware of the lighting limitations of this room.

In the end, it will probably be necessary to add some recessed lights in addition to the current light fixture.

My son loves navy blue, which of course ties in well with all the blues we are in our house already. However, in a room without a lot of natural light, navy looks incredibly dark. So instead of having it as a main color, it’s an accent color in the lamps, artwork and pillows. To brighten up the space, the nightstands are bright white and the rug is a light neutral color with a nod to the blues.

To stop the design from feeling to nautical or coastal with just blue and navy, I balanced it out with the wooden dresser, faux leather beanbag chair and tan pillows on the bed.

I love how this one turned out and I think it’s a great, simple color scheme that will grow with him!

Design 2

For this design, I’m throwing out all my rules about creating the space bright, and relying on the fact that we will have to add canned lights to the space to brighten it up.

I’m embracing navy and gray, for a much more stereotypical tween boy color palette. I’ve added a nod to his favorite sport, hockey.

I’ve had my eye on these nightstands for a year or so, and I think they would be so perfect for his bedroom. You’ll notice the same dresser is in this design – it’s the one already in the room and it’s staying because I love it, it’s a great size and it fits the room perfectly.

The light gray bed I chose for this design has a lower profile than the bed in the first design, but I just love the texture on the fabric and the soft gray color. I tried to balance out all the cooler tones by adding the wicker table lamps and bringing in some (faux) greenery.

Oh, and how pretty is the plaid rug? Definitely one of my favorites finds!

Design 3

This final design is simpler, cleaner and I think a little more adult feeling.

I particularly like the blue accent chair which adds a fun touch to an otherwise simple design. The nightstands in this version are the ones that match the dresser. I don’t usually like to do matching furniture, but I think these are cute.

The headboard on this bed is higher, and since we have low ceilings, I opted for artwork over the dresser instead of the bed). I chose the domed (mushroom!?) lamps for a fun touch.
