Modern coastal bedroom decor transcends the traditional, theme-heavy coastal style, offering a more sophisticated, relaxed approach that emphasizes natural elements and simplicity. This style is perfect for creating a serene bedroom retreat that feels both contemporary and timeless.

In today’s post, I’m going to share easy tips for adding modern coastal style to your home in 2024. I’ll share some of my favorite modern coastal bedroom ideas, break down the design elements, and share my favorite online sources for coastal furniture, bedding, and decor.

The Essence of Modern Coastal Style

Modern coastal design is characterized by its understated elegance and a connection to the natural world. Unlike traditional coastal themes, which often rely on overt nautical motifs, modern coastal decor focuses on a clean, minimalist aesthetic that evokes the calm and tranquility of the seaside without being clichéd or overly thematic.

With this design style, you’ll notice a lot of natural wood tones, white furniture, and woven elements in rugs, baskets, light pendants, and even headboards. Other natural and organic elements like cotton, and linen will also be prevalent and a nod to the relaxed way of living that this design style embodies.

Soft, Neutral Color Palette

The foundation of a modern coastal bedroom is a light and airy color palette. Soft neutrals, such as whites, creams, and light grays, form the backdrop, reflecting the hues of sand, stone, and sea mist.

Accents in muted blues and greens complement the neutral base, subtly nodding to oceanic elements.

Natural Elements and Textures

At the heart of modern coastal design are natural materials and textures that bring an organic, earthy feel to the space. Think light-toned wood furniture, linen and cotton textiles, woven rattan or jute accessories, and elements that mimic the textures found along the shore.

These materials not only add visual interest and warmth but also create a connection to the natural world, essential for the modern coastal look.

Clean Lines and Functional Beauty

Furniture in a modern coastal bedroom should feature clean, simple lines, avoiding the ornate or elaborate.

The focus is on functional beauty, with pieces that offer a sense of calm and uncluttered space. The aim is to create a relaxed environment where every element has both a purpose and aesthetic appeal, mirroring the straightforward beauty of the coastal landscape.

Layered Comfort

Comfort is key in a modern coastal bedroom, achieved through layers of soft bedding, plush pillows, and cozy throws. These elements invite relaxation and rest, further enhancing the room’s tranquil atmosphere.

The textiles should echo the natural theme, with fabrics like linen and soft cotton prevailing, adding to the room’s tactile experience.

Light-Filled and Open

A modern coastal bedroom should be filled with as much natural light as possible. This openness to the outdoors is a hallmark of coastal living, bringing a sense of airiness and connection to the external environment.

Where to Start When Decorating Your Own Modern Coastal Bedroom

  1. Start with white or light colored walls.
  2. Add in furniture in natural wood tones. Your bed can be wood, too, or a light colored upholstered material.
  3. Layer in your bedding. A white duvet always look beautiful and can be layered with quilts or blankets in your preferred colors (blues and beiges are always a safe bet). Don’t forget to add throw pillows!
  4. Add woven elements with an area rug, pendant light or even just a basket in the corner of the room.

Where to Shop For Modern Coastal Decor

I like to pick and choose luxury elements with more affordable elements when designing spaces. Invest in good quality bedding and it will last years. Rugs can be purchased for under $300 at stores like HomeGoods or HomeSense, and TJ Maxx and Marshalls have amazing finds in store every week, too!

With that being said, here are some of my favorite online retailers for getting that modern coastal look:

Serena & Lily – Excellent source of bedding, pillows, furniture, rugs, lamps and more.

McGee & Co – more of a modern organic style, but definitely lots of beautiful items that also fit into the modern coastal style.

Wayfair – plenty of budget friendly furniture finds.

RugsUSA – a great source for affordable rugs.

CozyEarth – the only bed sheets I buy. They truly make sleeping so much better!

It’s about capturing the essence of the coast in a way that is subtle, refined, and deeply connected to the natural world, making it the perfect sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation.

  1. I love your classic taste. It is impeccable. Just wondering if you could give any suggestions for East Coast coastal decor. Serena and Lily seem exclusively West Coast to me. I remember visiting my aunt and uncle on Cape Cod, and the homes were beautiful, but in an East Coast way. I have seen the same type of homes in the Hamptons on Long Island. What do you think?

    1. I don’t agree that Serena & Lily is exclusively West Coast – their items can be certainly be styled in the more California Coastal style, but work equally well for the Hampstons/Cape Cod style…it’s all just in how they are styled!
