Adding an accent chair to any room is a great way to finish off an empty corner and they don’t have to cost a fortune! These affordable chairs will be the perfect addition to any room in your home.

One of the questions I frequently get asked is about the many accent chairs we have in our home. Whether it’s our blue living room accent chair, my son’s reading chair, or the baby’s nursery chair, I’ve sourced many affordable accent chairs that look beautiful, are of great quality, and most importantly are great value.

Accent Chairs Under $350

All the chairs featured are under $350 (any many for far less) which I think still comes in as “affordable” when purchasing a substantial piece of furniture for your home that hopefully you will have for many years to come.

Here are some of my current favorite affordable accent chairs and the best sources for them.

Sources for Accent Chairs

Wayfair: You may already know that I purchase a lot of items for my home from Wayfair. I’ve bought two accent chairs over the past year and loved each one. They come well-packed and usually all you have to do is screw the legs on!

Hayneedle: Hayneedle is one of my favorite online sources for outdoor furniture and accessories but they’ve really upped the ante when it comes to stylish and quality furniture, too.

Amazon: Yes, you really can find everything on Amazon! Their furniture selection is actually pretty awesome and if you have a PRIME membership, most of these have free shipping, too!

Target: Their furniture is really great! Especially with their designer collections like Studio McGee and Hearth & Hand, you can find a lot of really high-end-looking accent chairs affordably.

Why Add an Accent Chair?

Accent chairs are a way to add a touch of style and personality to your home decor in any room in your home. It’s also a way of adding extra seating to a room while still being design-conscious.

They are a great way to add statement pieces to a room design while still having a fully functional living space.

Accent chairs are used in a lot of spaces in your home including an office space, mixed into your family living room furniture, bedrooms, and formal living rooms.

They can come in all shapes and sizes, materials, etc. Depending on your decor style it could be a faux leather chair that meets your needs, or maybe a set of rattan chairs for a mid-century modern flare. Let’s go over the basics of accent chairs before you pick out the perfect chair for your room.

What is the difference between an accent chair and an occasional chair?

Really the only difference between an occasional chair and an accent chair is the fact an accent chair serves as a design element in the room providing a pop of color, pattern, or texture. An occasional chair is just referencing a chair that isn’t used on a daily basis but isn’t an accent to the design.

For example, you may have a dining room table that seats 8, but you have 6 of the dining room table chairs around the table and 2 of them in the corners of the room. These would be occasional chairs as you pull them to the table when you need to seat 8.

Whereas in your living room, you have a couch and a love seat with two bold-patterned living room chairs across from them for easy conversations. These two bold-patterned chairs would be accent chairs as they serve a design element and are not used on a daily basis.

Where to put an accent chair in a small room?

Small spaces can be tricky design-wise to balance, especially when you want to add an accent chair. Depending on the setup of your small room a corner, a small empty wall, or placed next to a small shelf are great places.

The key with a small room is to not overwhelm the flow! Find a little spot that needs a focal point, and place it there.

Also, keeping the accent chair in the neutral colors family will help to keep the design balanced. Think neutral color scheme but texture, like boucle` or leather.

Should your accent chair match your couch?

Think coordination vs. matching. You want to avoid all your furniture being the same color as this has limited visual interest. Instead, have a color palette throughout the room that all coordinates together. If your accent chair matches your couch exactly, would it truly be an accent chair?

For example, if your couch is a nice bright white and you have subtle blue tones throughout your room, you could choose a neutral texture like a boucle` or a subtle blue pattern for the accent chair. They won’t match the bright white but they would be similar styles.

What to look for in an accent chair?

Style

When you are picking out an accent chair, you need to first figure out what style you want. I love to look on Pinterest for inspiration, you can see my inspo boards here

Figure out if you want a high back, a cozy armchair, a couple of lounge chairs, swivel chairs, or maybe a super aesthetic modern chair.

Material

When you are thinking about your accent chair, the material is almost as important as the size. If it’s in a room that will be used a lot, opt for a material that is easy to keep clean. I love to find ones with a removable cover so it’s simple to wash. If it will be more of a decor item, you can get away with more of a fragile material.

Size

Always keep in mind the size of your room and the size of the pieces of furniture in your room. Just as I shared about the small room, be sure you are picking a sizeable accent chair or chairs if the room is a large size. The furniture in the room should feel like it was designed specifically for the room, not a mistake!

Final Thoughts:

There are plenty of high-quality chairs available at a great price. It’s all about finding the right balance between style, comfort, and affordability.

I think it’s so fun to shop around and find the best accent chairs for your room. It’s an exciting step in the designing process, have fun with it!
